Three Early Warning Signs of Stroke Identified Years in Advance: Study

Islamabad (Khyber Report) A new scientific study has identified three common physical signs that may indicate an increased risk of stroke years before the actual onset of the condition.

Stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency, and delayed treatment can significantly increase the risk of death. Experts emphasize that understanding early warning signs and risk factors is crucial for prevention.

There are two main types of stroke: one caused by bleeding in the brain due to a ruptured blood vessel (brain hemorrhage), and the other caused by blockage of blood flow to the brain, leading to oxygen deprivation and brain damage.

Risk of stroke increases with age, particularly after 55 years, where it nearly doubles every decade. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol further increase the likelihood of stroke.

According to new research from Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China, three physical indicators—loss of muscle mass, weak hand grip strength, and slower walking speed—may signal a significantly higher risk of stroke in the future.

The study found that reduced muscle strength can increase stroke risk by up to 30 percent, while weak grip strength is associated with a 7 percent higher risk. Slow walking speed was linked to a 64 percent increased risk of stroke.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 480,000 individuals who were initially free from stroke and were followed over several years.

The findings showed a strong association between declining physical strength and increased stroke risk. Scientists explained that although muscle loss naturally occurs with aging, rapid decline may indicate underlying health deterioration, inflammation, and metabolic changes.

They concluded that muscle weakness may serve as an early warning sign of stroke risk, while reduced walking speed appears to be one of the strongest predictors of overall health decline.

Common symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, facial drooping, loss of balance, confusion, dizziness, and vision problems in one or both eyes.

In women, additional symptoms may include severe headache, altered mental state, loss of consciousness, or coma.
