Why Are Red Fruits and Vegetables Important for Heart, Skin, and Brain Health?

Islamabad (Daily Qudrat) — Red-colored fruits and vegetables not only make food attractive but the various vitamins, antioxidants, and plant compounds present in them also make them an important part of a balanced diet. Tomatoes, red bell peppers, strawberries, cherries, and red grapes provide such nutrients that support various functions of the body.

The antioxidants present in these foods play a role in limiting the damage caused by free radicals in the body. Free radicals can damage cells, while a diet rich in antioxidants can help maintain overall health. However, fruits or vegetables of any single color should not be considered a guarantee of protection against all chronic diseases.

For heart health, the fiber, potassium, and other plant compounds present in red fruits and vegetables can prove beneficial. Their use as part of a balanced diet can help keep blood pressure and cholesterol within healthy limits. Along with this, keeping the amount of salt and saturated fat limited and continuing physical activity is also essential.

Tomatoes contain a natural compound called lycopene, which gives them their red color. It is an antioxidant and its possible health benefits have been researched. Tomatoes also provide vitamin C and potassium. However, it is not correct to say that tomatoes or any other food alone can prevent cancer; the risk of cancer is affected by multiple factors.

Red bell peppers contain vitamin C and carotenoids, which are important for the health of the eyes and other parts of the body. Proper nutrition can play a role in reducing the risks of certain vision-related problems with age. Similarly, the antioxidants present in red fruits can help protect skin cells from oxidative damage, but sunscreen and other precautions are also necessary to protect against the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Cherries and certain berries contain plant compounds whose anti-inflammatory effects are being researched. Including these fruits in a balanced diet can be beneficial, however, they should not be considered a substitute for the treatment of pain or inflammation.

The dietary fiber present in red fruits and vegetables helps keep the digestive system better and helps prevent constipation. In addition, strawberries and red grapes contain various plant compounds including flavonoids, whose relationship with brain function and overall health is also being studied.

The general advice of nutritionists is that fruits and vegetables of different colors should be included in the daily diet. Red foods are an important part of this diversity, but for health, adopting a balanced and varied diet is more beneficial than relying on just one type of fruit or vegetable.
