Govt. Clarifies Internet Shutdown Will Be Area-Specific During PTI Protest

Islamabad:Ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest scheduled for November 24, the government has clarified that any internet shutdown will be determined based on the security situation. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior stated that mobile data and Wi-Fi services would only be suspended in areas where security concerns are deemed significant. The spokesperson emphasized that internet and mobile services will continue as usual in other parts of the country.

Earlier, media reports, citing sources, had suggested that internet services would be shut down in major cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Multan after midnight on November 24. These reports also indicated that mobile phone signals would remain active, with the potential shutdown of internet services to be assessed based on evolving security conditions.

The government had already decided to suspend internet and mobile services in various districts of Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab in anticipation of possible unrest related to PTI’s protest. The decision was made to ensure public safety and control any potential disruptions during the demonstration.

The Interior Ministry’s clarification comes amid growing concerns over the safety of public infrastructure and the potential for clashes during the planned protest, which has already created a tense atmosphere in the capital and surrounding regions. The authorities have pledged to take all necessary measures to ensure peace and order during the protest.
