Claims of Horse-Trading Among KP Lawmakers Surface Amid Political Tensions

ISLAMABAD: Claims of political maneuvering and possible horse-trading among lawmakers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have surfaced amid growing political tensions in the province.

Senior analyst and anchorperson Muhammad Malik claimed that discussions were taking place in political circles in Islamabad about the evolving situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the possibility of a change in the provincial political landscape.

Speaking during a television programme, Malik claimed that former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had said he had the support of around 20 to 25 members of the provincial assembly and could seek a vote of confidence if a political crisis or emergency situation arose.

“We are hearing in Islamabad that Ali Amin Gandapur has said he has 20 to 25 MPAs with him and, if a situation arises, he can obtain a vote of confidence as chief minister,” Malik said, attributing the claim to behind-the-scenes political discussions.

Malik also discussed the position of current KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, saying that the provincial political situation remained tense. He claimed that PTI had not supported a military operation against militants despite demands from the federal government and security authorities.

The claims have not been independently verified.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Junaid Akbar Khan, commenting on the situation surrounding Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, said the only reason Afridi could face disqualification would be his unconditional loyalty to PTI founder Imran Khan.

Junaid Akbar said such a practice should come to an end and warned that if unjust decisions were taken against Imran Khan’s loyalists, all party leaders would have to distance themselves from what he described as a “corrupt system.”
