Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi Asserts Zero Tolerance for Protests, Warns of Consequences

Islamabad: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has emphasized that the government will fully enforce the court’s orders and will not allow any protests, rallies, or sit-ins. He made it clear that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party will be held responsible if any loss of life occurs due to non-compliance with judicial rulings.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Naqvi stated, “We will implement the judicial orders 100%. If any protest attempts are made, we will not allow them. If there is any loss of life, the responsibility will lie with PTI.”
The minister also mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will meet today regarding the formation of a committee to negotiate with PTI. He emphasized that they would follow the Prime Minister’s directives, but warned that any attempt to hold protests would complicate the situation.
When questioned about alleged messages from Adiala Jail, Naqvi dismissed the claims, stating, “I have no contact with anyone from Adiala.”
A journalist questioned the government’s stance on protests, asking why the current administration did not permit rallies while the previous PTI government had allowed them. Naqvi responded, “Who said we have not allowed protests? We have received applications, and they are under process. If we have not granted permission, we will inform you.”
Regarding potential violence during protests, Naqvi stressed that any loss of life would be the responsibility of those violating court orders. He warned, “Anyone who violates judicial orders or attempts to break the law will be held accountable.”
On the issue of road closures, Naqvi acknowledged the challenges but maintained that blocking roads, businesses, or services like internet and mobile networks should be avoided. He stated, “I agree that roads should not be blocked, nor should businesses or internet services be disrupted, but what can we do in such circumstances?”
The minister also addressed the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation in the province. He criticized the provincial government for not focusing on countering terrorism, while at the same time demanding military assistance. “It is their responsibility to ensure security. We assist them as required, but the primary responsibility lies with the provincial government,” he said.
Naqvi further clarified the government’s position on law and order, emphasizing that under the 18th Amendment, the responsibility for law and order lies with provincial governments, but the federal government provides necessary support.
Regarding comments from Bushra Bibi, Naqvi expressed frustration at the politicization of foreign relations, pointing to the contradictory stances regarding the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, as well as the handling of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit. “People should think for themselves about the frequent U-turns in political narratives,” he remarked.
The interior minister concluded by stressing the importance of lawful protest. “There are platforms for raising voices. Do not destroy the country through unlawful actions. If PTI wants to protest, it should do so legally. If they wish to negotiate, they must do so through proper channels—not through protests while simultaneously seeking talks.”
Naqvi reiterated that any violation of Section 144 in Islamabad would be met with strict enforcement measures.
