NEW DELHI — Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held an important meeting in New Delhi on Saturday on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, discussing regional and international issues of mutual interest.
According to official readouts, the two leaders stressed the need to support efforts to ease tensions, promote de-escalation and strengthen regional stability, while also exploring opportunities for peace and development in the region.
The talks took place during the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Leaders present included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Sheikh Khaled, who represented the United Arab Emirates.

BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration after intensive negotiations. The statement expressed deep concern over the continuing escalation in the Middle East/West Asia and called on all sides to exercise maximum restraint. It did not name any particular country, but urged respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and a diplomatic path toward lasting peace.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told the summit that BRICS countries should stand firmly on the right side of history. He said China would work with other BRICS members for peace in the Middle East and the Gulf, adding that the war in the region had inflicted severe losses on people across the area and did not serve the common interests of the international community.
Xi said the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf was becoming increasingly complex and urged BRICS nations to play a more active role in global peace and to intensify efforts for peaceful, diplomatic solutions to conflicts. He also announced that China would assume the BRICS presidency in 2027 and host the grouping’s 19th summit.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the unipolar world order that served the interests of a limited number of countries was becoming a thing of the past. He argued that fundamental geopolitical, geo-economic, technological and social changes were underway, including shifts in lifestyles, health systems, environmental conditions, social structures and the world’s demographic map.
Putin said the global balance of power was shifting toward new centres of growth in the Global South and the East. More countries, he added, were clearly asserting their readiness to protect national interests and take part in solving global problems. In an emerging multipolar order, he said, strengthening genuine multilateralism had become more important than ever, and more nations should be included in global governance, international institutions and efforts to address major challenges. Joint action to ensure international peace and stability, he concluded, was essential for global prosperity and public welfare.
