AI-Powered Smart Glasses Raise Privacy and Safety Concerns for Women

Meta Platforms is reportedly preparing to launch smart glasses equipped with artificial intelligence that can identify people in real-time and display their full profiles instantly.

According to a report by the New York Times, Meta is considering integrating facial recognition technology into its Meta Glasses, potentially allowing users to tag and identify faces connected to any Meta platform or with public profiles on Facebook or Instagram. The technology is still in development.

However, organizations working on domestic violence and harassment prevention have expressed concern that these glasses could increase the risks of harassment or misconduct, particularly for women and girls. Experts warn that individuals with ill intentions could use the technology to locate, track, or target victims without consent.

A Meta spokesperson said the company is carefully reviewing various options for the feature and will proceed cautiously, prioritizing privacy and safety before implementing any changes.

These developments highlight the growing tension between innovative AI applications and the need to protect vulnerable groups from potential misuse.
