Aitzaz Ahsan Raises Concerns Over Imran Khan’s Detention and Political Situation

LAHORE: Prominent lawyer and senior politician Aitzaz Ahsan has expressed serious concerns over PTI founder Imran Khan’s alleged solitary confinement in prison, restrictions on his basic human and legal rights, and the prevailing political situation in Pakistan.
Speaking during a podcast, Aitzaz Ahsan said the treatment being meted out to Imran Khan had no precedent in Pakistan’s history and was not supported by any established rules or regulations.
He said that even former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had not faced such treatment, arguing that no political leader had previously been kept from meeting anyone for months. Aitzaz maintained that prisoners are legally entitled to meet their personal doctors, lawyers and family members, but said that in Imran Khan’s case, the law and Constitution appeared to have been suspended.
Aitzaz Ahsan also criticized the treatment of Imran Khan’s sisters, alleging that they were subjected to a water-cannon operation outside the prison during severe cold weather. He described the incident as deeply regrettable and unprecedented in the country’s history.
He said Imran Khan’s prolonged solitary confinement had made him spiritually stronger despite the hardships of imprisonment. Referring to Imran Khan’s meeting with his sister Noreen, Aitzaz said his ability to remain composed and converse normally despite the circumstances was remarkable.

The senior lawyer further claimed that restrictions such as cutting off electricity, preventing family meetings and keeping Imran Khan in a death cell around the clock would only increase his popularity and political stature.
Aitzaz also highlighted Imran Khan’s role in establishing Shaukat Khanum cancer hospitals, saying that while the country had struggled to provide even one hospital, Imran Khan had established and successfully operated three cancer hospitals.
He criticized allegations of treason and bad faith against the PTI founder, saying such accusations could damage Pakistan’s image internationally.
Commenting on the May 9 events, Aitzaz Ahsan alleged that political workers had been deliberately implicated as part of a broader strategy.
