Oil Spill Spreads 390 Kilometers Off Oman Coast Amid Middle East Tensions

MUSCAT:A major oil spill from a vessel has been reported in waters near the coast of Oman amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

According to Omani state media, oil has spread across an area of approximately 390 kilometers in the sea near the coast of Dhofar Governorate and continues to move in a northeastern direction.

The report warned that if the current conditions persist, the oil could spread an additional 121 kilometers over the next 48 hours, posing serious risks to marine life and the coastal environment.

Maritime security sources said the spill originated from a vessel carrying Russian crude oil. The ship’s crew reportedly contacted Yemen’s Mukalla port on June 8 to report difficulties.

Initial assessments suggest that an explosion may have occurred aboard the oil tanker, triggering the spill. However, investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the incident and the extent of damage sustained by the vessel.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the movement of the oil slick and assess its potential environmental impact along Oman’s coastline.
