Punjab Government to Launch Electric Bus Service on Six New Routes from July

Lahore: The Punjab government has completed preparations to launch a modern electric bus service on six new routes from July as part of its efforts to reduce environmental pollution and provide affordable public transportation across the province.
Under the new initiative, commuters in Narowal will be able to travel on electric buses for a fare of just Rs20. The provincial government has deployed 11 new electric buses for the service.
The new routes will connect Narowal with several key areas, including Shakargarh, Zafarwal, Qila Ahmadabad, Qila Kalarwala, and Badomalhi, improving transportation links within the district.
Officials said each electric bus can travel approximately 80 kilometers on a single full charge. They added that as the green transport network expands, more buses will be introduced on these routes to meet growing passenger demand and improve service frequency.
Meanwhile, the federal government has significantly increased the subsidy for Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services in Rawalpindi and Islamabad under the new federal budget. The allocation has been raised from Rs3 billion in the previous fiscal year to Rs7.3 billion for the upcoming financial year.
The enhanced subsidy is expected to improve the quality and affordability of public transport services in the twin cities. The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus service, operational since 2014, serves hundreds of thousands of passengers daily.
Authorities also plan to introduce Green Electric Bus services on 20 additional routes across Rawalpindi and Islamabad during the new fiscal year. So far, public transport services have been launched on 23 routes in the Rawalpindi Division, with further expansion planned in phases.
