Five Earthquakes Recorded in Balochistan Since Friday, More Tremors Possible: Chief Meteorologist

Quetta: Five moderate earthquakes have been recorded across Balochistan since Friday, with the strongest measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale in Barkhan and surrounding areas on Saturday morning, according to Pakistan’s Meteorological Department.
Chief Meteorologist Ameer Haider Laghari said that both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are located on the Eurasian tectonic plate, where the recent seismic activity is occurring.
He explained that the earthquakes are taking place in the upper layer of the tectonic plate and are part of broader global seismic activity. According to Laghari, energy waves generated by a recent earthquake in Venezuela are affecting interconnected tectonic plates, contributing to seismic movements in the region.
The chief meteorologist also referred to past seismic events, noting that major earthquakes in Indonesia between 2000 and 2011 were followed by the devastating 2005 Kashmir earthquake, highlighting how stress and energy can transfer across connected tectonic plate systems.
Laghari said that further tremors remain possible until the accumulated seismic energy dissipates. However, he emphasized that it is scientifically impossible to accurately predict the exact timing, location, or magnitude of future earthquakes.
Authorities have advised residents in earthquake-prone areas to remain alert and follow safety guidelines in the event of additional aftershocks.
