Senator Kamil Ali Agha Proposes Abolition of Fixed Charges on Electricity Bills

Islamabad: During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Senator Kamil Ali Agha proposed the abolition of fixed charges imposed on electricity bills, describing them as an excessive burden on consumers.
Addressing the committee, Agha said that fixed charges on power bills had become a source of severe hardship for the public. He cited his own experience, stating that the electricity consumption cost for his lodges amounted to Rs6,200, while the fixed charges alone stood at Rs6,800.
The senator argued that consumers using as little as 100 units of electricity were effectively being forced to pay amounts equivalent to much higher consumption levels, sometimes comparable to 400 units.
Calling the fixed charges “unjust,” Agha urged the committee to recommend their complete removal in order to provide relief to electricity consumers.
During the meeting, Committee Chairman Salim Mandviwalla responded by saying that officials from the Power Division would be summoned after the budget to explain the rationale behind the charges and address the committee’s concerns.
The issue of fixed electricity charges has been a growing concern among consumers, with lawmakers increasingly questioning their impact on household and business electricity costs.
