Study Suggests Complete Elimination of Sugar May Harm Health: Research

Islamabad: Completely eliminating sugar from the diet may not be as beneficial for health as commonly believed, according to a new medical study.

Researchers at the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait found that total avoidance of sugar could negatively affect gut and metabolic health.

The study involved feeding mice two different low-fat diets over a period of 16 weeks. One group was given a diet completely free of sugar, while the other received a diet containing sugar.

Researchers observed changes in insulin sensitivity, metabolic hormones, glucose levels, gut bacteria, and inflammation in the liver and intestines.

Findings showed that mice deprived of sugar experienced several adverse effects, including impaired glucose control, increased insulin resistance, disruption of gut microbiota balance, higher intestinal inflammation, and an increased risk of fat accumulation in the liver.

The researchers stated that completely removing sugar from the diet may not always be beneficial for metabolic and digestive health, as balanced nutritional intake is essential for maintaining gut health and immune function.

They added that this area had not been widely studied before, particularly in terms of the effects of total sugar elimination on the body.

According to the researchers, the results could help improve future dietary guidelines and recommendations regarding sugar consumption.
