Rawalpindi Ring Road Project Near Completion, Expected to Open Soon

RAWALPINDI: A major infrastructure project for the residents of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi has entered its final stage as the Rawalpindi Ring Road is now more than 90% complete.
According to official sources, preparations are underway to open the 38.6-kilometre-long road for traffic by June 15, while the final inauguration date will be approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Officials stated that the complete carpeting of the entire route has been finished, and all four interchanges at Banth, Chak Beli Khan, Adiala, and Chakri have also been completed. Traffic entering from the GT Road Banth Interchange is already being linked to the motorway via Thalian Interchange, even though the latter is still under completion.
The project, which has reportedly missed its deadline four times, now has only 5–7% of construction work remaining. This includes drainage systems and finishing and beautification work.
Authorities added that the Thalian Interchange has been included in Phase II of the project and will be made fully operational later. Land acquisition for its expansion is still ongoing.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 46.64 billion. Meanwhile, approval has also been granted for establishing an industrial estate along the Ring Road, though its final approval is subject to the Punjab Assembly.
Business leaders have welcomed the development, calling the project a “game changer” for Rawalpindi’s economy, expected to boost trade activity and regional connectivity once completed.
