‘Don 3’ Faces Major Setback as Reports Reveal Reasons Behind Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh’s Exit

MUMBAI: The much-anticipated Bollywood film Don 3, directed by Farhan Akhtar, is reportedly facing a major crisis after a series of setbacks involving its lead actors and production plans.
According to Indian media reports, actor Ranveer Singh decided to leave the project just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin, leading to a dispute that allegedly escalated into a legal conflict between the actor and the production house.
Crisis Began with Shah Rukh Khan’s Departure
Industry sources claim that the first major blow to the franchise came when Shah Rukh Khan exited Don 3 in 2023.
Reports suggest that Shah Rukh Khan’s decision was driven by prolonged delays in the project’s development and creative differences over the film’s direction. Despite years passing since the release of Don 2, the script and production plans reportedly failed to reach a final stage.
Following the blockbuster success of Pathaan and Jawan, the actor is said to have shifted his focus toward large-scale action projects, making his return to the franchise less likely.
Script Concerns and Creative Differences
After Shah Rukh Khan’s departure, production company Excel Entertainment introduced Ranveer Singh as the new face of the franchise. However, reports indicate that the actor later developed reservations about the final screenplay.
According to media reports, Ranveer felt that the script was not strong enough to carry forward the legacy established by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, both of whom previously played the iconic character.
His priorities reportedly changed further after the success of another film project, leading him to reconsider his involvement in Don 3.
Production House Claims Heavy Losses
Indian media reports claim that Excel Entertainment had already spent approximately ₹450 million (45 crore rupees) on pre-production, international locations, action training, and other arrangements before Ranveer’s reported exit.
The production company is said to be seeking compensation for those expenses, while reports suggest that Ranveer Singh offered around ₹100 million (10 crore rupees) as a settlement. However, the offer was allegedly rejected.
The dispute reportedly prompted Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani to approach the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), which initially issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh before later withdrawing it.
Mediation Efforts Failed
Several prominent figures from the Indian film industry, including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Ashutosh Gowariker, Rohit Shetty and Karan Johar, reportedly attempted to mediate between the parties, but no breakthrough was achieved.
Reports also suggest that the controversy has strained Ranveer Singh’s long-standing professional relationship with filmmaker Zoya Akhtar.
Uncertain Future for Don 3
With Ranveer Singh reportedly out of the project, Excel Entertainment is now said to be searching for a new lead actor. However, ongoing disputes, repeated delays, and legal complications have cast significant doubt over the future of Don 3.
While no official final announcement has been made regarding the film’s cast or production schedule, industry observers believe the franchise is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history.
