Why Madam Noor Jehan’s Song Is Going Viral in India Decades After Its Release

Lahore: A classic Punjabi song by Pakistan’s legendary singer Madam Noor Jehan has unexpectedly become a major trend among India’s Gen Z on social media, proving once again that music transcends borders and generations.

The iconic track “Saanu Nehar Walay Pul Te Bula Ke”, recorded nearly five decades ago, is currently trending on Instagram, where it is being widely used in reels, particularly by young Indian users. Despite being released decades earlier, the emotional depth of the lyrics and Madam Noor Jehan’s powerful voice have struck a chord with a new generation.

According to Indian media reports, the song was recorded around 50 years ago, yet its timeless melody and relatable lyrics have made it popular among today’s youth. The scale of its popularity can be gauged from the fact that a 43-second clip of the song has been used in over 100,000 Instagram reels.

The trend gained momentum after a group called “Patiala Mehfil” shared a video featuring the song, which went on to receive millions of views. Many young listeners are connecting the lyrics with their own life experiences, particularly situations involving unfulfilled promises and being ignored in modern-day relationships.

Social media users have explained that the lyrics — “Saanu nehar walay pul te bula ke, te khoray mahi kithay reh gaya” — resonate strongly today, symbolizing moments when someone makes a promise to meet but disappears or starts ignoring the other person.

It is worth recalling that the song was originally featured in the Pakistani Punjabi film “Dukh Sajnan De”, released on September 14, 1973. It was later included in Madam Noor Jehan’s album “Sohni Mera Mahi”, which was released a year after her passing.

The renewed popularity of the song highlights the enduring legacy of Madam Noor Jehan and reinforces the idea that powerful music remains relevant, regardless of time or borders.
