Experts Advise Proper Methods to Preserve Qurbani Meat During Extreme Summer Heat

Islamabad: As Eid-ul-Adha approaches, food safety experts have advised households on proper methods to preserve sacrificial meat during extreme summer heat, heatwaves, and prolonged power outages, warning that improper storage can quickly lead to spoilage and health risks.

According to nutritionists and food safety specialists, following basic hygiene and storage principles can help preserve Qurbani meat for days or even months while maintaining its nutritional value and taste.

Experts emphasize that the first and most important step is ensuring that refrigerators and freezers are thoroughly cleaned before use. Any ice buildup, poor airflow, or lack of cleanliness can reduce cooling efficiency and increase the risk of meat spoilage.

They further advise that meat should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours after slaughter, as warm conditions allow bacteria and microbes to multiply rapidly, making the meat unsafe for consumption.

Before storage, excess fat, blood-stained portions, and unwanted tissue should be removed. The meat should then be cut into appropriately sized portions based on intended use. Experts recommend placing the meat in a refrigerator for 5 to 6 hours before freezing to allow its internal temperature to gradually decrease, which helps preserve its texture and freshness.

For packaging, airtight food-grade plastic bags or containers should be used. Removing excess air from packaging is essential to prevent freezer burn. Labeling each packet with the date of storage is also recommended to ensure proper rotation of stored meat.

In case of electricity outages or freezer failure, traditional preservation methods such as boiling or salting and drying meat can be used as emergency alternatives, similar to older preservation practices.

Experts also advise minimizing frequent opening of the freezer door during load-shedding to maintain stable internal temperatures, which can help preserve meat for several hours even without electricity.

Health professionals strongly warn against consuming spoiled or foul-smelling meat, as it can cause food poisoning, stomach infections, and other serious health complications.

They conclude that proper cleaning, safe packaging, and correct storage practices not only reduce waste but also play a vital role in ensuring family health and food safety during the summer season.
