Why Pakistan Celebrates Independence Day on August 14 Instead of August 15

Islamabad:Despite the fact that the Indian Independence Act 1947 legally granted freedom to both India and Pakistan on **August 15, 1947**, Pakistan observes its **Independence Day on August 14**. Renowned journalist **Hamid Mir**, in a recent episode of his program *Capital Talk*, presented documented evidence explaining the reasons behind this shift.
According to Hamid Mir, the Indian Independence Act clearly states that both India and Pakistan were to gain independence on **the same date – August 15, 1947**. Pakistan’s first official postage stamp also marks **August 15** as Independence Day.
However, the decision to observe Independence Day on **August 14** was made in **June 1948** by Pakistan’s federal cabinet under **Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan**. The primary reasons were both **symbolic and practical**:
1. The **Transfer of Power ceremony in Karachi** (then capital of Pakistan) occurred on **August 14, 1947**, a day before India’s ceremony in New Delhi on August 15.
2. Due to a **30-minute time difference** between India and Pakistan, when it was **midnight on August 15 in India**, it was still **11:30 PM on August 14 in Pakistan**. Therefore, technically, Pakistan entered independence while it was still **August 14** locally.
Hamid Mir also referenced **Indian politician Jaswant Singh**, who criticized Lord Mountbatten’s decision to mark India’s independence on August 15 — a date tied to Japan’s surrender in World War II — calling it **inappropriate and historically disconnected from India’s own struggle**.
In contrast, **India continues to celebrate Independence Day on August 15**, while **Pakistan, since 1948**, officially commemorates its freedom on **August 14**, aligning the date with local events and symbolic significance.
