Sindh Cabinet Approves Acceleration of Karachi BRT Red Line Lot-2 Project

KARACHI: The Sindh Cabinet has approved measures to speed up construction work on the Karachi BRT Red Line Lot-2 project, including handing over the project on an emergency basis to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO).

The cabinet meeting was held at the Chief Minister House under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, where key proposals of the Transport and Mass Transit Department were approved.

Officials said the previous joint venture agreement for Lot-2 was terminated due to delays and poor performance, and the earlier contractor’s agreement was also cancelled.

The cabinet approved awarding the project to FWO on an emergency basis under a direct and government-to-government (G2G) arrangement.

The Lot-2 section of the BRT Red Line spans 12.85 kilometres from Numaish Chowrangi to Meteorological Office, officials added.

The Chief Minister directed that construction work on University Road be completed within 90 days and set deadlines for the early completion of mixed traffic lanes. He also instructed acceleration of underpasses, elevated structures, and drainage system development.

The cabinet also approved emergency off-budget funding for TransKarachi to ensure smooth continuation of the project. Officials informed the cabinet that FWO has already mobilized staff and heavy machinery at the site.

Murad Ali Shah said that immediate steps should be taken to restore Karachi’s key arterial road, adding that completion of the BRT Red Line project would help reduce traffic congestion in the city.
