Iran Says Talks With U.S. Mediated by Pakistan Not Failed, But Face Difficulties: Foreign Minister

New Delhi: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that nuclear negotiations with the United States, facilitated through mediation efforts by Pakistan, have not failed, although the talks are going through a difficult phase.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Abbas Araghchi said that Iran had not initiated war but acted in self-defense and is trying to maintain the ceasefire.

He stated that Iran is not responsible for disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the waterway is only restricted for countries involved in conflict with Iran. He also said that Iranian authorities have provided guidance to several Indian vessels for safe passage through the Strait, noting that the area remains highly sensitive due to reported mine threats and complex maritime conditions.

The Iranian foreign minister said Tehran is only interested in negotiations if the other side is serious, adding that there is a clear lack of trust due to contradictory messages from the United States.

He further said Iran does not seek nuclear weapons and has already provided evidence of its peaceful nuclear program under the 2015 agreement.

Araghchi also highlighted Iran’s strong strategic ties with Russia, noting recent discussions with the Russian foreign minister and ongoing cooperation on regional and international issues. He said Iran is currently not considering transferring uranium enrichment activities, adding that talks with the U.S. remain deadlocked on this issue.

Responding to another question, he said past events have shown that the United States and Israel have failed to ensure security in the United Arab Emirates, while emphasizing that Iran values diplomatic efforts from countries willing to assist in negotiations.

Araghchi reiterated that Iran welcomes diplomacy but said inconsistent signals from Washington have created doubts about the U.S. intentions in the ongoing talks.
