Shakeel Qadir Khan said that in a drought-affected province like Balochistan, improving agriculture and water resources is essential for economic growth. He sought technical and financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank for upgrading agricultural infrastructure and introducing modern technologies.
Special attention was given to the Kachhi Canal project, which officials described as a game changer for farmers in the province. The second phase of the project is expected to irrigate millions of acres of land and significantly increase crop production.
Discussions were also held regarding expansion plans for the Washuk Dam project, aimed at reducing flood risks and increasing water storage capacity to improve water supply in the affected districts.
Both sides also emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure development and skill-building programs for youth in the IT sector. The ADB Country Director appreciated the efforts of the Balochistan government in promoting development initiatives.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary said that the provincial government has enrolled 280,000 children in schools and is preparing to launch an adult literacy program. He added that the government is also ensuring employment generation through enterprise development programs and working to provide solar energy facilities to 27 towns across the province.
The ADB Country Director assured that the bank would discuss Balochistan’s development needs with higher authorities to strengthen cooperation and support for future projects.
