Chaman Leaders Criticize Government Inaction, Call Border Closure “Economic Suicide”

CHAMAN (Web Desk) – Tribal leader Khan Amanullah Khan Achakzai has criticized the government’s slow response to issues in Chaman, calling the closure of the Pak-Afghan border an “economic suicide” for the region.
Speaking at a press conference held at Chaman Press Club under the banner of a Pashtun national jirga, Achakzai, along with representatives of political and civil society groups, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the city.
Participants highlighted a rise in target killings allegedly carried out by motorcyclists, as well as the increasing use of drugs, which they said is severely impacting the youth. They also raised alarm over serious crimes including the alleged smuggling of women and children, demanding immediate action from authorities.
The speakers described the closure of the Chaman Border as devastating for the local economy, stating that nearly 1.5 million people depended on cross-border trade for their livelihoods. They said goods worth millions remain stranded across the border, leaving local markets deserted and businesses paralyzed.
Due to worsening economic conditions, residents are reportedly being forced to sell property, migrate, and send children to work instead of school.
The press conference also questioned the conduct of security and administrative authorities, alleging harassment of local residents and traders under the pretext of being “migrants.” Claims of bribery at checkpoints were also raised.
The participants demanded transparent investigations into alleged police excesses and the registration of cases against those responsible. They announced the formation of a committee that will soon engage with provincial and federal authorities to seek solutions to the issues faced by the region.
