Confusion Over Holidays: Will May Really Bring 19 Days Off? Situation Clarified

ISLAMABAD: Reports circulating about an unusually high number of holidays in May 2026 have sparked public curiosity, with claims suggesting anywhere between 11 to 19 days off in the month.
According to details, May appears to begin and end with holidays, making it an extended break period for many Pakistanis due to a combination of weekends, public holidays, and the expected Eid-ul-Adha break.
The month is expected to be significant for employees, students, and the business community, as the number of off-days appears higher than usual, generating widespread public interest.
In institutions operating under the ongoing austerity measures—where Fridays are often observed as holidays or work-from-home days—the total number of holidays could effectively reach up to 19 days. Without including Fridays, the count is estimated at around 11 holidays.
May is set to begin with Labour Day on Friday, May 1, followed by a weekend on May 2 and 3, creating an initial three-day break.
Similarly, the second week may include consecutive holidays on May 8, 9, and 10, while the third and fourth weeks also feature recurring weekend breaks, each forming three-day intervals.
The most significant focus remains on Eid-ul-Adha holidays expected in the final third of the month. The exact date will depend on the sighting of the Zil Hajj moon, with a Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meeting likely on May 17.
If the moon is sighted on May 17, Eid-ul-Adha may fall between May 27 and 29, combining with weekends to create an extended holiday period. If not, and the month completes 30 days, Eid could fall between May 28 and 30, with an additional Sunday on May 31 potentially extending the break further.
In an additional scenario, if the government declares an extra holiday on May 25, a continuous long break could be formed when combined with the May 23–24 weekend, potentially giving citizens nearly a week off.
Overall, depending on calculations and official announcements, May 2026 could feature between 11 to 19 holidays, which would be an unusually high number compared to standard months.
The situation has also been influenced by austerity policies, under which several government departments have adopted a four-day workweek, while some educational institutions are already observing extended weekend closures.
Experts note that while extended holidays provide relief and family time for citizens, they may also impact productivity and economic activity, particularly in business sectors concerned about potential slowdowns.
