KP CM Says National Interest Prioritized Over Politics, Warns of Federal Boycott

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi stated that his government has consistently prioritized national interest over political gains, emphasizing what he described as a responsible political approach.
Addressing a provincial cabinet meeting, Afridi said Pakistan has received global recognition for its stance on peace and dialogue, adding that Imran Khan has advocated such policies for over two decades.
He reiterated that military operations and wars are not lasting solutions, stressing that dialogue and peace have always been preferred. He also noted that a planned rally on April 9 was postponed in the broader national interest.
The chief minister claimed his government attended federal meetings despite political differences, putting “political capital at stake” for the country’s benefit. However, he criticized the current federal leadership, alleging it prioritizes personal interests over national concerns.
Afridi also raised concerns over what he termed political discrimination against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, citing incidents of police action against party workers and alleged violations of civil liberties.
He expressed concern over reported mistreatment of Imran Khan’s family members and restrictions on access to medical care for Bushra Bibi, calling it a serious violation of basic rights.
The chief minister warned that continued “biased treatment” against the party could lead to the end of political restraint, including possible non-cooperation with the federal government and adoption of a boycott policy.
On governance, Afridi said preparations for the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2026–27 are in their final stages. He directed all departments to ensure comprehensive planning and effective execution.
He also announced a public participation initiative, inviting citizens to submit suggestions regarding roads, tube wells, hospitals, and other basic facilities. A dedicated online portal will remain open for public feedback from May 4 to May 8.
Afridi said public input would be incorporated into the development program to ensure inclusive and participatory governance.
