PM Shehbaz Sharif Orders Accelerated Measures to Promote Electric Vehicles in Pakistan

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to speed up efforts for the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country.
The directive came during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review progress on the adoption of electric mobility. Officials briefed the meeting on ongoing initiatives aimed at expanding EV usage nationwide.
The meeting was informed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four certificates have been granted for electric cars. Additionally, 123 applications have been received so far for the establishment of EV charging stations. Authorities also shared plans to ensure that 30 percent of vehicles in Pakistan run on electricity within the next five years.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to expedite all related measures, stating that the promotion of electric vehicles would help reduce the country’s fuel import bill while contributing to environmental protection and energy security.
He further instructed officials to ensure transparency in subsidies for electric motorcycles, particularly for low-income individuals, and to accelerate the implementation of the EV policy framework.
