At What Age Does Old Age Officially Begin? Survey Reveals Public Opinion

Islamabad (Khyber Desk) – A new survey has revealed interesting public perceptions about when old age officially begins, with many people considering 69 years as the starting point of old age.
According to a study conducted by a research organization called Seven Seas, involving over 2,000 British adults, respondents on average identified 69 as the age when a person is considered “old.” The findings would likely be surprising for several celebrities in their late 60s, including Tom Hanks, Kim Cattrall, and Steve Harvey, who are near that age bracket.
Previous research had suggested that people once considered 62 years as the beginning of old age. However, the latest data indicates that perceptions are shifting, with modern generations pushing the threshold further.
Health and wellness expert Donna Bertoli noted that although society is redefining old age as occurring later in life, many people still delay adopting healthy habits that support aging well. She emphasized that if 69 is now seen as the new “old age,” then maintaining health should begin much earlier.
Another related survey of 4,000 people found generational differences in attitudes toward aging. Those born between 1946 and 1964 believed old age begins at around 67, while younger generations disagreed, often placing the threshold at a lower age.
Generation Z respondents reportedly consider individuals in their early 60s—including public figures like Michelle Obama, Brad Pitt, and Lisa Kudrow—as already entering old age.
The survey also revealed more striking perceptions: Gen Z believes cognitive decline may begin around age 62, difficulty adapting to technology starts at 59, and style relevance declines by 56.
Katherine Kershaw, co-lead of the Age Without Limits campaign, said that age-related stereotypes and negative messaging begin early in life and contribute to anxiety about aging. She added that even children are exposed to anti-aging culture, which shapes unrealistic perceptions of growing older.
