Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Approves New Electric Buses for 10 Districts

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the provision of new electric buses for 10 districts under the province’s free transport initiative.

A special meeting chaired by the Chief Minister was informed that over 125,000 passengers have benefited from the free transport programme so far, operating across 21 routes with 3,560 bus trips completed.

Under the new plan, electric buses will be provided to Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara.

Officials said that 100 electric buses will arrive this month, followed by 350 by mid-May and 264 more by the end of June. Dedicated bus depots will also be established in each division for the electric bus fleet.

The Chief Minister also sought a detailed plan for launching 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level and reviewed progress on mass transit projects in Gujranwala and Faisalabad.

During the meeting, progress on Punjab’s first e-taxi scheme was also presented, under which 194 e-taxis will arrive in May and 208 in June.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed officials to expedite the repair and construction of metro bus stations and approved a new design for upgraded facilities. The “Empower-Her” project for modern bus stations in Lahore was also reviewed.

Additionally, the government granted in-principle approval for an e-bike scheme for government employees as part of its green mobility initiative.
