Gold Rush in South Waziristan Raises Environmental Concerns

Reports of gold particles in a stream in South Waziristan Upper have drawn large numbers of locals hoping to extract the precious metal.

Residents have gathered along the Trekh Konar Nala, where traces of gold were reportedly found. However, local elders have raised serious concerns over the use of mercury in the extraction process.

According to community leaders, mercury is being used to separate gold particles, leading to significant contamination of water in Kanigram. They warned that the pollution could pose risks to both human health and the environment.

Deputy Commissioner Ismatullah said authorities have taken notice of the situation and action is being initiated to address the issue.

The development highlights growing environmental and public health concerns as unregulated mining activities increase in the area.
