Islamabad: In response to the recent tensions in the Middle East, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan issued a joint statement commending Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon.
According to international news agencies, the statement welcomed the recent two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States and highlighted Pakistan’s key role in facilitating this development.
The joint declaration was released from the office of British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street and was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, emphasizing its global significance.
The statement stressed that diplomacy is the only path to ending the conflict and called for meaningful negotiations to continue immediately, aiming for a permanent and sustainable resolution in the coming days.
It also urged all parties to ensure the safety of Iranian civilians and maintain regional peace, warning that failure to control the situation could trigger a severe global energy crisis.
Additionally, the leaders called for strict adherence to the ceasefire, particularly in Lebanon, where tensions have escalated, and committed to safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to prevent disruption in global oil supplies.
