Balochistan Media Action Committee Rejects Proposed Digital Media Policy, Warns of Threat to Newspaper Industry

Quetta: The Balochistan Media Action Committee has rejected the provincial government’s proposed digital media policy, warning that implementing it could devastate the newspaper industry by cutting 80% of advertising revenue.

The committee held a meeting at the Quetta Press Club, chaired by Shaheed Zulfiqar. Participants included Anwar Sajidi, President of the Balochistan Editors Council; Fareedullah Khan, Senior Vice President of the Balochistan Union of Journalists; Shah Hussain Tarin, General Secretary of BUJ; Muhammad Afzal Mughal, Vice President of Quetta Press Club; and other media leaders.

During the meeting, members expressed serious concerns about the proposed drastic cuts in newspaper ad quotas, noting that such a policy could destroy the print media sector. They also highlighted the issue of unfair distribution of government advertising, which has often been diverted to dummy newspapers supported by certain officials, undermining genuine media outlets.

The committee demanded that the provincial government consult all stakeholders before implementing the digital media policy and ensure fair distribution of government advertisements to prevent misuse of public resources.

A plan of action was agreed upon, including meetings with government representatives, provincial ministers, and parliamentary leaders to present the committee’s concerns. If the government fails to involve stakeholders, a follow-up meeting will determine the next steps.

Additionally, issues regarding journalists’ employment were discussed. The committee noted that many newspapers have laid off reporters, photographers, and sub-editors, with only a few retaining staff. Editors’ Council members agreed to ensure full-time staff are properly employed with fair salaries, appointment letters, and necessary benefits, while discouraging part-time and dual-job arrangements.

The committee vowed to oppose the policy at all levels if it continues to threaten the viability of Balochistan’s media industry.
