Pakistan Rejects Nationwide Smart Lockdown; President Zardari and PM Shehbaz Announce Major Relief Measures

Islamabad (Daily Qudrat News) – Pakistan will not implement a nationwide “smart lockdown” after strong opposition from the provinces, according to sources from a high-level consultation meeting at the Presidential Palace. The meeting, chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari, included Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Vice President Ishaq Dar, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, federal ministers, the chief ministers of all four provinces, and leadership from Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, along with National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Asim Malik.

During the session, officials conducted a detailed review of national security, the economic situation, and potential regional challenges affecting Pakistan. It was noted that proposals to increase fuel prices were repeatedly rejected by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and savings from austerity measures, development budget cuts, and reducing official vehicle usage by 60% have been redirected to provide public relief.

President Zardari emphasized that economically vulnerable groups will not be left unsupported during these challenging times. He directed a public awareness campaign to promote fuel conservation and public transport usage, alongside other measures to ease inflationary pressures.

The meeting also highlighted that despite global crises, Pakistan maintains sufficient fuel reserves with no disruption in supply. Vice President Ishaq Dar briefed participants on recent diplomatic engagements with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, as well as his upcoming visit to Beijing. Provincial governments updated the session on steps taken to control inflation and ensure the supply of essential goods
