Delay in 5G Spectrum Auction in Pakistan: PTA Faces Challenges, but Hopes Remain High for Rollout

Islamabad:The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom, along with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), had previously claimed that the auction of the 5G spectrum and the subsequent rollout of services would be completed by April 2025. The government was not only expecting significant investment in terms of licensing fees but also saw the launch of 5G as a potential political advantage.

However, it now appears that internet users will have to wait a little longer to experience 5G services in Pakistan. According to PTA, there have been several challenges in the auction process of the 5G spectrum.

Since PTA’s statement regarding the difficulties in the 5G auction, rumors have been circulating. Some reports suggest that it may be impossible to hold the auction this year, while others believe it will take place. This uncertainty has led to confusion and skepticism.

To clarify this situation, V News sought to find out whether the 5G auction would be possible within this year. According to PTA sources, preparations for the 5G auction are in the final stages and the auction will indeed take place this year. The sources confirmed that PTA is following its schedule, and the 5G spectrum auction will be completed by mid-June 2025. The auction is expected to occur by mid-May, after which an additional month will be allocated for licensing and importing the necessary equipment based on the signed bandwidth agreements. Commercial 5G services are expected to begin towards the end of this year or early 2026.

Reports indicate that delays in the launch of 5G are due to the incomplete merger agreements between telecom companies and legal complications. However, the sources added that they are urging the government to provide clear guidance so that PTA can finalize the auction rules and understand how many auction players will participate. PTA is committed to resolving these issues, and the government is cooperating with them. PTA’s preparations are in the final stages.

It is noteworthy that PTA has completed the telecommunication market assessment and is holding consultations with stakeholders on telecom reforms. The auction process has reached the stage of spectrum pricing and auction design. The advisory committee will send its policy recommendations to the government within a month, after which the government will issue the policy directive.

According to PTA documents related to the 5G auction, cases related to 2600 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 1800 MHz are pending in courts, and efforts are underway to resolve them quickly. The cost of 5G infrastructure development and the availability of 5G devices are also seen as challenges. Despite these hurdles, PTA remains hopeful that 5G will usher in a new era of progress for Pakistan.

Experts argue that the introduction of 5G will provide faster internet with better quality across the country. It will not only lay the foundation for the swift delivery of IT services but will also boost foreign investment and contribute to an increase in GDP.
