Gas Shortage Threatens Power Generation, CNG Supply Likely to Be Suspended

Islamabad: A worsening gas shortage in Pakistan is expected to disrupt power generation and lead to the suspension of gas supply to the CNG sector, according to official sources.
Sources revealed that starting in April, power plants across the البلاد will receive only 80 MMCFD (million cubic feet per day) of gas, significantly lower than the 150 MMCFD supplied in March. The توقف of LNG supplies is also anticipated, further intensifying the energy crisis.
The reduced gas availability is likely to impact electricity production, with only 25 to 30 MMCFD expected to be allocated to the power sector. Additionally, gas currently designated for the fertilizer sector may be diverted to support electricity generation.
The CNG sector faces a complete shutdown of gas supply as authorities prioritize power generation amid the shortage.
Sources warned that coal-based power generation, producing between 1,500 to 1,800 megawatts, is also at risk due to fuel shortages. Plants in Sahiwal and Jamshoro are reportedly running low on coal reserves, with current stocks sufficient for only 3 to 7 days.
As a result, electricity production could decline by 10 to 15 percent, raising the likelihood of additional load shedding of 2 to 3 hours in various parts of the country.
Meanwhile, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is also facing supply constraints. A spokesperson stated that gas output has declined due to technical issues at two gas fields.
Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation and working to resolve the unexpected shortage as quickly as possible.
