Preparation for Jobs in South Korea: Language Skills and Merit Key for Pakistani Workers

Islamabad: Authorities have emphasized that proficiency in the Korean language and merit-based selection are crucial for Pakistanis seeking employment in South Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS).

A key meeting was held between officials of the Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC) and the EPS Center to discuss opportunities for increasing the number of Pakistani workers going abroad. During the session, officials addressed frequently asked questions by job seekers.

According to the EPS Center head, employers in South Korea select workers through a fully computerized system. Local job centers provide a list of candidates, typically three times the number required, and final selection is made solely by the employer without interference from any external party.

Officials highlighted that Korean employers prefer workers with strong command of the Korean language, as it helps them adapt quickly, improve productivity, and reduce workplace accidents.

The EPS Center stated that sending more skilled Pakistani candidates with Korean language proficiency would enhance recognition of Pakistani workers over time.

Under the points-based selection system, candidates are chosen purely on merit. The process includes scores from the Korean language test in the first stage and skills assessment in the second stage, with no additional factors considered.

It was further announced that from this year, the minimum required score for the Korean language test in the manufacturing sector will be 60. The skills assessment process will be simplified in basic sections, while the importance of interviews will be increased for better evaluation of candidates.

Officials also noted that although a large number of workers were sent to South Korea after COVID-19, the pace has recently slowed. In response, South Korea’s Foreign Workforce Policy Committee has adjusted entry quotas, and the Human Resources Development Service of Korea plans to reduce selection quotas.

Authorities clarified that while industry preferences may vary by country, all rules and procedures remain consistent for applicants under the EPS program.
