Experts Warn Common Painkillers May Harm Kidney Function

Health experts have warned that the excessive use of common pain-relief medicines may damage kidney function.

According to **Kidney Care UK** and the **National Pharmacy Association (NPA)**, people should avoid relying too heavily on anti-inflammatory painkillers such as **Ibuprofen** because they can negatively affect the kidneys.

Experts say individuals who already face a higher risk of kidney disease—such as those suffering from diabetes or high blood pressure—should be particularly cautious when using these medicines.

However, even people with healthy kidneys may face problems if they take painkillers in high doses or over a long period of time. These medicines can reduce blood flow to the kidneys or damage kidney tissues.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including **Ibuprofen**, **Naproxen**, and **Diclofenac**, may also increase blood pressure and harm the tiny blood vessels inside the kidneys.

**Olivier Picard**, chairman of the NPA, said medicines have the power to heal but can also cause harm if they are not used responsibly. He advised people to follow medical guidance and avoid unnecessary or prolonged use of painkillers.
