Pakistan Voices Concern Over Canada–India Uranium Supply and Nuclear Technology Cooperation

Islamabad: Pakistan has voiced concern over the supply of uranium and nuclear technology cooperation between Canada and India.
According to Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi, the agreement represents a special exemption for one country under civil nuclear cooperation. He highlighted that India’s 1974 nuclear test led to the creation of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
Andrabi noted that India has not placed all of its civil nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, with several Indian nuclear installations still outside international inspections.
The spokesperson warned that external uranium supplies to India could increase strategic imbalance in the region and potentially allow such reserves to be used for military purposes.
He added that selective exemptions could undermine the credibility of the global non-proliferation regime, emphasizing that civil nuclear cooperation should follow non-discriminatory and uniform principles.
