First Total Lunar Eclipse of 2026 to Grace the Skies Today

Skywatchers will witness the first total lunar eclipse of 2026 today, offering a spectacular celestial display commonly known as a “Blood Moon.”

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the lunar eclipse will begin in Pakistan at **1:44 PM**, while the Moon will start entering the Earth’s shadow at **2:50 PM**.

### Timeline of the Eclipse in Pakistan

* Partial eclipse begins: 2:50 PM
* Total eclipse begins: 4:05 PM
* Peak of eclipse: 5:45 PM
* Total phase ends: 6:17 PM
* Eclipse completely ends: 7:23 PM

Officials said that at moonrise in Pakistan, the eclipse will be visible in its partial phase.

### Why It’s Called a “Blood Moon”

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight from reaching the Moon. However, some sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere and bends toward the Moon, giving it a deep reddish or coppery glow—hence the term “Blood Moon.”

### Visibility Around the World

Besides Pakistan, parts of eastern India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be able to observe the eclipse before its conclusion.

The best views are expected across:

* The Pacific region
* New Zealand
* Australia
* Eastern Asia
* Western North America

In contrast, much of Europe and Africa will not be able to witness the event, as the Moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse.

Astronomy enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the event, as total lunar eclipses provide a rare and stunning opportunity to observe the Moon bathed in Earth’s shadow.
