Study Finds Cancer-Linked Chemicals in Popular Hair Extensions

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) – A shocking new study has revealed the presence of potentially harmful and even cancer-linked chemicals in hair extensions widely used for enhancing hair volume and length. Experts have issued an urgent warning, advising consumers to exercise caution.

Hair extensions have become a major part of the global fashion and glamour industry. Celebrities such as Australian model Elle Macpherson, Ivanka Trump, and pop star Taylor Swift have been known to use them, further increasing their popularity among the general public.

However, scientists at the Silent Spring Institute in Massachusetts, United States, have identified several hazardous chemicals in a recent investigation. Surprisingly, these substances were also found in extensions made from human hair.

Researchers analyzed 43 popular hair extension products sold online for chemical content. The results showed traces of numerous harmful substances, including flame retardants, phthalates, pesticides, styrene, tetrachloroethylene, and organotins. Previous scientific studies have linked these chemicals to cancer, hormone disruption, developmental problems in children, and adverse effects on the immune system.

Dr. Alicia Franklin, who led the research team, stated that many companies fail to fully disclose the chemicals used in their products, leaving consumers unaware of potential long-term risks. She explained that because these fibers are attached close to the scalp and neck, heat styling may release chemicals into the air, which users can inhale.

Various types of hair extensions, including clip-ins, tape-ins, weaves, and micro-links, are especially popular in the United Kingdom and the United States, forming a significant part of the beauty industry. Experts have advised consumers to carefully review product information and, where possible, opt for chemical-free or certified safer alternatives.
