Voting Underway in Bangladesh General Elections Amid Tight Contest

Voting is underway in Bangladesh as the country holds its general elections, with 50 political parties participating in the electoral race. More than 127 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots.
Polling began at 7:30 a.m. local time across 299 constituencies and will continue until 4:30 p.m. A total of 300 parliamentary seats are being contested, with a party or alliance required to secure at least 151 seats to form the government.
Major contenders include the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the National Citizen Party, and the Jatiya Party, among others. Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is the BNP’s candidate for prime minister. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has fielded Shafiqur Rahman as a strong candidate for the top office.
The National Citizen Party, reportedly composed largely of members of Generation Z who played a key role in the ouster of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina Wajed in August 2024, is allied with Jamaat-e-Islami. The Awami League is not participating in the elections due to a ban on the party.
BNP chief Tarique Rahman cast his vote and stated that maintaining law and order would be his top priority, emphasizing the need to ensure public safety. He also pledged greater focus on women, noting that they make up half of the country’s population, and expressed confidence in victory.
Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman also cast his vote, calling the election a “turning point” for Bangladesh. He said public demands and expectations are changing and stressed that the nation deserves change.
Security has been tightened nationwide for the polls, with the army deployed to maintain order. The Chief Election Commissioner stated that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the election process remains transparent, free, and impartial.
A recent public survey regarding the parliamentary elections predicted a close contest between the BNP-led alliance and the alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. According to the survey, the BNP-led coalition is projected to receive 44.1 percent of the vote, while the Jamaat-led alliance is expected to secure 43.9 percent.
