Achakzai Stands by Remarks in NA, Says Salute to Army That Operates Within Constitution

**Islamabad:** Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), محمود خان Achakzai, said on Wednesday that he stands by his previous remarks and has never made emotional statements.
Addressing the National Assembly session, Achakzai said he has been coming to parliament since 1990 and has always spoken responsibly. “I stand by the words I have spoken. I have never made emotional statements,” he said, questioning the provincial representation within the armed forces.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq interrupted, advising him to avoid discussing the army and instead speak about the martyrs.
Achakzai said that his people had rendered significant sacrifices against British rule, adding that Pakistan is their country and they should receive their due share according to population. “We want our share in governance. This is not based on prejudice. I am a citizen of this country and I will speak against opponents of democracy,” he said. He further alleged that Pashtuns had faced economic marginalization.
He also referred to a past statement by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif regarding granting citizenship to Afghans, and questioned whether parliament exists to legitimize martial laws. However, he added, “We salute the army that remains within the limits of the Constitution.”
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif termed the opposition leader’s remarks about the military as irresponsible.
Speaking in the assembly, Asif said that Achakzai had claimed the Pakistan Army belonged to only four districts, calling the statement unexpected and inappropriate from the opposition leader. “Every sensible person knows that the Pakistan Army represents the entire nation. Its identity is national,” he said, accusing Achakzai of attempting to level allegations against the armed forces.
