WHO Confirms Nipah Virus Death of Woman in Bangladesh

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) — The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the death of a woman in Bangladesh due to the Nipah virus. According to WHO, the patient was admitted to the hospital on January 28, where tests confirmed she had contracted the virus. Earlier this month, Bangladesh’s International Health Regulations National Focal Point reported a confirmed Nipah virus case in the Rajshahi Division to the WHO.

The woman, aged between 40 and 50, initially showed symptoms of fever and neurological complications. She had no recent travel history but had consumed sap from a raw date palm tree, believed to be the source of infection. Thirty-five individuals who had close contact with her were tested, and none were found to be infected.

About a week ago, two Nipah virus cases were reported in India’s West Bengal state, raising concern in China and several Southeast Asian countries. Some airports have tightened screening procedures. However, the WHO has stated that, based on the current situation, no international travel or trade restrictions are being considered, and the global risk of spread is considered low. Nipah virus outbreaks typically occur between December and April.

Currently, there is no specific approved treatment or vaccine for the Nipah virus. Mortality rates among infected individuals range from 40 to 75 percent, making it a highly dangerous disease.
