Pakistan’s Participation in ICC T20 World Cup Uncertain After Bangladesh Exclusion

Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup has come under question following the International Cricket Council’s decision to exclude Bangladesh from the tournament after it refused to play matches in India due to security concerns.
Although the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already announced the national squad for the T20 World Cup, uncertainty remains over whether the team will take part in the mega event. In this regard, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to hold an important meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss Pakistan’s participation in the tournament.
According to sources, the meeting will focus on whether Pakistan should play or boycott the T20 World Cup. It has also been decided that consultations will be held with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on the matter.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that consultations are underway and the government will play its role, adding that the final decision will be communicated once made.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has termed the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s stance as principled and rejected what he described as the ICC’s “double standards.” He said politicizing cricket is not in anyone’s interest and emphasized that all stakeholders should adhere to the principles of the game. He added that Pakistan’s players are talented and capable of competing anywhere, noting that success on the field comes through teamwork.
Earlier, Mohsin Naqvi had stated that the PCB operates under the government of Pakistan, and the final decision regarding participation in the T20 World Cup will be taken by the government.
It is worth noting that a few days ago, the Bangladesh Cricket Board refused to travel to India for its World Cup matches citing security concerns and requested that its matches be shifted to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC rejected Bangladesh’s request and included Scotland in the tournament in place of Bangladesh.
Sources had earlier indicated that Pakistan could also consider boycotting the World Cup if Bangladesh was excluded.
The ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on February 7, with Pakistan’s matches currently scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka.
