Search Operation Continues at Gul Plaza as Death Toll Reaches 55–60: DC South

Karachi:Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso has said that rescue operations are still underway to recover possible bodies trapped under the debris of Gul Plaza.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, the DC South stated that between 55 and 60 people lost their lives in the incident, out of which post-mortem examinations of 48 victims have been completed, while 86 people are still reported missing.

He said the operation to retrieve bodies from under the rubble is ongoing, adding that the use of heavy machinery has been temporarily suspended due to the risk of further collapse. Rescue personnel have re-entered the building, as the use of machinery could endanger the remaining structure.

The deputy commissioner further said that the entire building is being searched again. However, areas where debris is still present cannot be searched at this stage. Once the rubble is cleared, a thorough search of the collapsed sections will be carried out.

DC South added that DNA samples of the deceased and their family members are being collected, though identification is difficult in some cases due to the condition of body parts.

He also said investigations are underway to determine why the building’s doors were locked at the time of the incident. Statements from various individuals have been recorded. Additionally, notices have been issued to buildings lacking fire safety arrangements, and six such buildings have so far been served notices for non-compliance with fire safety regulations.
