Election Commission Takes Major Action Over Non-Submission of Asset Declarations, Memberships of Senators and Lawmakers Suspended

Quetta: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a notification suspending the memberships of several senators and members of the National Assembly as well as all four provincial assemblies for failing to submit details of their assets and liabilities for the financial year 2024–25 within the prescribed deadline.
According to the ECP, the action has been taken under Section 137 of the Election Act 2017. Lawmakers who did not submit their own and their dependents’ asset declarations by January 15 have been declared inactive with immediate effect. They will not be allowed to participate in parliamentary proceedings until the required details are submitted.
Among the prominent suspended members are nine senators, including Musadik Malik, Abid Sher Ali, Murad Saeed and Ahmad Khan. In the National Assembly, the memberships of 32 lawmakers have been suspended, including Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Akhtar Mengal, Syed Ali Musa Gilani and Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani.
At the provincial level, the ECP has suspended the memberships of 50 members of the Punjab Assembly, 33 members of the Sindh Assembly — including Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Saeed Ghani and Hafiz Naeemur Rehman — and 28 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. In addition, seven members of the Balochistan Assembly have also been affected by the action.
The ECP clarified that the suspended lawmakers will remain ineligible to take part in any legislative activity or parliamentary sessions until they submit their asset and liability statements as required by law.
