Pakistan, Indonesia in Talks Over Sale of 40 JF-17 Fighter Jets and Drones: Reuters

Islamabad: Pakistan is considering the sale of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and combat drones to Indonesia, with negotiations reportedly at an advanced stage, according to an international news agency Reuters.

Reuters reported that Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin met Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu in Islamabad, where detailed discussions were held on the potential sale of Pakistan-made fighter aircraft and drones.

Citing informed security sources, Reuters claimed the talks are centered on a possible defence agreement that could include more than 40 JF-17 fighter jets, along with combat drones. Indonesia has also shown strong interest in Pakistan’s Shahpar drones, the report added. However, details regarding the timeline and delivery schedule of the potential deal have not yet been disclosed.

Both the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and Pakistan’s military have confirmed the meetings. Indonesian Defence Ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Riko Ricardo Siregar said discussions focused on overall defence cooperation, strategic dialogue, strengthening institutional ties, and exploring long-term mutually beneficial partnerships. He clarified that no final decision has yet been made.

According to Pakistan’s military, the Indonesian defence minister also met Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, where matters of mutual interest, evolving regional and global security dynamics, and prospects for enhanced bilateral defence cooperation were discussed.

The report further noted that Pakistan is also holding talks with Indonesia on air defence systems and the training of Indonesian Air Force officers and engineering staff. A retired air marshal cited by Reuters said a deal is under consideration and could involve approximately 40 fighter jets.

Indonesia is actively modernizing its air force and has already entered major defence agreements, including the purchase of Rafale jets from France, a deal for KAAN fighter jets with Türkiye, and ongoing negotiations with China and the United States for additional combat aircraft.

Growing Global Demand for Pakistani Defence Industry

Interest in Pakistan’s defence industry has increased significantly in recent years, particularly following the operational use of Pakistani aircraft during a limited conflict with India. The JF-17 has already been included in defence agreements with Azerbaijan and as part of a multi-billion-dollar defence package with Libya’s National Army.

Pakistan is also exploring defence cooperation with Bangladesh, potentially involving Super Mushshak training aircraft and JF-17 jets, while discussions are reportedly ongoing with Saudi Arabia over a possible defence deal worth $2–4 billion.
