PTI Distances Itself from Alleged Threats Against Field Marshal in UK Protest

Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has disassociated itself from alleged threats made against Field Marshal General Asim Munir during a protest held in the United Kingdom, clarifying that the remarks do not represent the party’s stance or ideology.

The controversy emerged after a protest outside the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford, UK, where alleged threatening slogans and statements were made against Pakistan’s military leadership. The incident has drawn diplomatic attention, prompting Pakistan to lodge a formal demarche with British authorities.

Following Pakistan’s protest, the UK has sought evidence from the Pakistani government to assess the matter under British law. After a video surfaced showing a woman delivering a speech during the protest, PTI swiftly announced its dissociation from her remarks.

PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram stated that the woman who addressed the protest is not an office-bearer of the party, nor do her language or views reflect PTI’s official position or political thinking. He emphasized that PTI fundamentally opposes violence, incitement, hate speech, and the use of abusive or inappropriate language, and considers such conduct to be against party policy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted strongly to the incident. On Friday night, British Deputy Head of Mission Matt Cannell was summoned to the Foreign Office, where a protest note was formally handed over. According to sources, the demarche strongly objected to the raising of threatening slogans against Pakistan’s top military leadership on British soil.

In response, a spokesperson for the British High Commission, quoted by the BBC, said that police and prosecution services in the UK operate independently of the government. The spokesperson added that if any foreign government believes a crime has been committed on British territory, it should provide all relevant evidence to the police liaison authorities, who would then assess the material in accordance with the law.

The spokesperson further stated that if any violation of the law is established, criminal investigations could be initiated, and the matter would be dealt with strictly under British legal procedures.

Pakistani officials maintain that highly provocative language was used during the protest, including alleged death threats against Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal General Asim Munir, with references to acts such as car bomb attacks. Sources also claim that the protest was organized through an official PTI social media account, which later shared footage of the demonstration showing controversial slogans and statements.

In its communication, Pakistan’s Foreign Office urged British authorities to take swift and effective action against elements using UK soil to promote instability in Pakistan. Pakistan has expressed hope that the UK will treat the matter seriously and ensure accountability in line with the law.

The incident has led to intensified diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
