Outrage in India After Alleged Removal of Muslim Woman Doctor’s Veil; Calls Grow for Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s Disqualification

Patna: A controversy has erupted in India after an alleged incident involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is accused of forcibly attempting to remove the veil of a Muslim woman doctor during an official ceremony in Patna. The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, and triggered calls for his resignation and disqualification.

According to reports, the woman doctor had arrived at a government event to receive her appointment letter when the Chief Minister allegedly tried to pull off her hijab. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, prompting strong reactions from Muslim users and members of the general public across India.

The Indian National Congress strongly condemned the incident, calling the Chief Minister’s behavior unacceptable and disrespectful. The party said that attempting to remove a woman’s hijab amounts to misconduct and is an unforgivable act. Congress leaders demanded the immediate resignation of Nitish Kumar, holding him responsible for the incident.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) also issued a statement, questioning how the dignity and safety of Muslim women could be ensured if a sitting Chief Minister himself was involved in such conduct.

Several Indian social media users cited constitutional provisions while criticizing the Chief Minister. One user referred to Article 191(1)(b) of the Indian Constitution, arguing that the judiciary should take notice and examine the Chief Minister’s fitness to hold office. Others emphasized that respect, accountability, and constitutional values must be upheld, stating that dignity cannot be compromised under any circumstances.

Political analyst Ashok Swain, in a social media post, described the incident as deeply troubling, alleging that misogyny and Islamophobia have become increasingly normalized in India’s political environment. Other users termed the act a violation of the woman’s dignity, religious freedom, and bodily autonomy, calling it unacceptable in a democratic society.

The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also criticized Nitish Kumar, questioning his intent and mental fitness, and demanded accountability over the incident.

The controversy continues to intensify, with mounting pressure on the Bihar Chief Minister as political parties, civil society members, and social media users demand a clear explanation, apology, and appropriate action.
