UN Calls for Immediate End to Imran Khan’s Solitary Confinement and Inhumane Treatment

Geneva (Qudrat Daily) — The United Nations has urged the Pakistani government to take immediate and effective measures to end the reported inhumane and degrading treatment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan while in custody. Alice Jill Edwards, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, emphasized that the current conditions may violate fundamental international human rights and constitute psychological and physical suffering.
According to a statement published on the UN website, Edwards highlighted that all aspects of Khan’s detention must comply with international standards. Reports indicate that since his transfer to Adiala Jail in September 2023, Khan has been kept in prolonged solitary confinement, spending approximately 23 hours a day in his cell with extremely limited contact with the outside world. Continuous camera surveillance reportedly infringes on his right to privacy.
Edwards pointed out that extended or indefinite solitary confinement is prohibited under international law and any period beyond 15 days is considered equivalent to mental torture. She called for the immediate cessation of Khan’s solitary confinement, citing its illegal nature and the severe negative impact on his health.
The reports also indicate that Khan is not allowed outdoor time, social interaction with other inmates, participation in communal prayers, or consistent access to lawyers, family, and court-authorized visitors. His cell is reportedly small, poorly ventilated, and lacks natural light, with extreme temperatures, foul odors, and insect infestations affecting his physical well-being. These conditions have reportedly caused nausea, vomiting, and significant weight loss.
Edwards stressed that all detainees must be treated with human dignity, with considerations for age, health, and physical needs, including proper rest, protection from extreme weather, adequate space, light, warmth, and ventilation.
At 72 years old, Khan has pre-existing serious medical conditions, including spinal injuries from a 2013 accident and wounds from an assassination attempt in 2022. Reports suggest he has not been provided adequate medical care, prompting Edwards to demand immediate access for his personal doctors.
The UN representative confirmed that Pakistani authorities have been formally engaged on the matter and assured that the situation will be closely monitored.
