Punjab Cane Commissioner Announces Action Against Sugar Mills Failing to Start Crushing

Lahore:The Punjab Cane Commissioner has announced that action will be initiated from today against sugar mills that have failed to begin the crushing season despite clear government directives.
According to official sources, the Punjab government had set **November 15** as the deadline for commencing the crushing process. However, out of **41 sugar mills** in the province, only **five** have begun operations.
The Cane Commissioner stated that only the sugar mills owned by the **Sharif family** complied with the government’s deadline, while the majority remained non-operational. He warned that the delay by most mills could trigger a further **increase in sugar prices** in the coming days.
Meanwhile, **Kisan Ittehad Chairman Khalid Baath** accused mill owners of intentionally delaying crushing in an attempt to purchase sugarcane at lower rates from farmers.
It is noteworthy that sugar is currently retailing across the country at **Rs 200 to Rs 229 per kilogram**, adding to the public’s concerns as the crushing delay continues.
