Balochistan’s Deadly Highways: Over 1,500 Killed and 33,000 Accidents Reported in Just 2.5 Years

Quetta: Road accidents in Balochistan have become a grave and ongoing crisis, claiming more lives than terrorism in recent years. Data reveals that over **1,500 people have died** and more than **35,000 have been injured** in **over 33,000 road accidents** across the province during the past two and a half years — covering **2023, 2024, and the first half of 2025**.

**Year-by-Year Breakdown:**

* **2025 (First Six Months):** Between January and June 2025, a total of **12,110 traffic accidents** were reported across Balochistan, resulting in **239 deaths** and **15,690 injuries**.
* **2024 (Full Year):** The year proved disastrous, recording **20,300 road crashes**, causing **471 deaths** and leaving **over 17,500 people** injured or permanently disabled.
* **2023 (Full Year):** During 2023, **969 major accidents** were reported, leading to **794 fatalities** and **2,078 injuries**.

**Cumulative Statistics (January 2023 – June 2025):**

* **Total Accidents:** 33,379
* **Total Fatalities:** 1,504
* **Total Injuries:** 35,268

According to a report by the **Medical Emergency Response Center (MERC) 1122**, from **October 2019 to September 2025**, Balochistan witnessed **77,826 road accidents**, in which **1,743 people were killed** and **103,902 injured**.

The **Quetta-Karachi Highway**, notoriously dubbed the “**Bloody Highway**,” remains the deadliest route in the province. Experts attribute the alarming number of accidents to **overspeeding, poor and narrow single-lane roads, lack of traffic law enforcement, driver negligence**, and **insufficient emergency response systems**.

Transport and safety officials have repeatedly called for **upgrading key highways to dual carriageways**, **enhancing traffic awareness campaigns**, and **strengthening road safety regulations** to prevent further loss of life on Balochistan’s perilous roads.
